When is it time for TMS?

TMS is typically prescribed by physicians after other drug treatments fail to improve symptoms. It is a non-invasive, non-drug alternative that is designed to help your condition with minimal risk of side effects. TMS is typically administered in cooperation with other treatments as a means to amplify their mental health benefits.

Will My Insurance Cover TMS?

Not all insurance company policies are the same, but most major insurance companies are likely to cover or reimburse your TMS treatments in the following circumstances:

  •  You are an adult who has been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  •  Your depression continues after trying two antidepressant medications (some insurance companies require four failed medications).
  • You are an adult who has been diagnosed with OCD.
  • Your OCD symptoms have not been relieved by psychotherapy and at least two medications.
  • You are not pregnant or nursing.

TMS Sessions

TMS is administered in a doctor’s office in 19 to 45 minute long sessions. You recline in a chair similar to the kind you would sit in at the dentist or a spa, and wear special earplugs to block out the noise of the TMS machine’s magnetic pulses. These pulses emanate from a specifically calibrated device that is placed on your head, targeting and stimulating mood-regulating areas in the brain. There’s no sedation or recovery involved; you can go about your day after a treatment session.

What does TMS do?

Other mental health treatments usually require the systems in your body to deliver relief. Not TMS. With sophisticated NeuroStar technology, our treatments use focused magnetic pulses, similar to an MRI to relieve your condition at the source: the areas in your brain that control your mood. These areas contain synapses that can become less responsive, leading to broken connections and difficulties with mood regulation. The pulses from TMS target and reignite these dormant synapses, giving you the boost you need to break free from your condition and its harmful impact on your life.

Completion is Key

A full course of TMS treatment is about six weeks of daily sessions. While many patients see improvements within two to three weeks of TMS, it is important that you complete the full treatment course in order to ensure that the effects are long lasting. These effects can include fewer days of depression, an increased desire to socialize, and a greater interest in activities than before treatment. Those around you may notice these results before you do!

While a full course of TMS treatment is about six weeks of daily 19 to 45 minute sessions, treatment lengths and schedules may vary from patient to patient.

A TMS session does not involve any injections, sedatives, electric shocks or surgical procedures. You may feel some minor discomfort from where the device is placed on your head, but this usually subsides early in the treatment.

TMS’s greatest strength is its accuracy. Unlike with most mental health treatments, a TMS session will target only the exact location of your condition without disrupting the rest of the brain.

TMS is completely different from ECT, or “electroshock therapy.” ECT is used to treat severe psychiatric issues and requires a patient to be sedated while electricity induces a brief, controlled seizure. TMS uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate mood-regulating areas of the brain without the need for anesthetics. You can even read, talk, or watch TV during treatment.
