Depression can happen to all races, genders and ethnicities. It is listed by the National Institute of Mental Health as one of the most recurring mental disorders in the United States. More women are diagnosed with the disorder than men, but men are less likely to recognize and seek help for their symptoms. Individuals with traumatic experiences such as abuse or severe loss, and members of the LGBTQI+ community are shown to have an increased risk of developing depression.
